Quarter season review

Post by Three of Diamonds »

Well, here we are 11 games in and it would be good to review where we are.

Score out of 10 -
5.5 we've absolutely thrown away points this season in the league IMO and as for cup games once the Corby games were over, we haven't been good enough.
The Manager is convinced that this team has more to give, well it's time to take from games not give. The play offs are disappearing over the horizon at this moment so it's time to get some momentum going.
I still don't think we've found our best formation and maybe we need to look at a change or two player wise?

Verdict - must do better

Whilst there have been moments this season where I must admit that the thought of the play offs have entered my mind…I always come back down to earth and remember that whilst it’s not impossible, it’s not realistic this year. I’m confident based off of what we’ve seen so far that we should be pretty safe come the end of the season, with the current squad.

It would be good to see another 1 or 2 players coming in though, as I really believe that we are just short of being a genuinely good side week in week out. Hopefully Inman can help in the respect, but who knows how long he will be with us.

Christ, we technically got relegated last season, rebuilt the squad primarily with Step 5 players and now you're expecting us to be challenging for the play offs? Nothing wrong with a bit of ambition but I think you need a reality check.

While I'm as guilty as anyone for always expecting/hoping for more, I think that verdict is a little harsh given 6 months ago we escaped relegation on a reprieve. I'm frustrated at our continuing failures in the cups, where a good run as we see with our near neighbours could hugely impact our short to medium term future as a club, but in the grand scheme of things, I think we all would have taken 13th at this stage of the season and I'm content with that.

I do agree that there is more to come from this team as we have seen glimpses of what could be a decent team, but to move beyond mid table we would need to add a few faces, preferably ones with more experience at this level if possible. Early days though, still all to play for and last season shows us that our manager is able to build a team that can do well in this league and as the season goes on I think we'll only get stronger.

It's time for a change of captain. As much as I like Wilson as a player he is a liability as captain. He overdoes the talking/arguing and some of his tackling borders on reckless. He's played in 13 games and gets a yellow card at least every second game. Let him play without the extra responsibility of captain. Charlie Green is perfectly capable of taking over the armband, and of course we have Inman now for a while.

I think you're reading something I didn't write if you think the play offs disappearing is the same as expecting us to be challenging for them, it's more a case of we're going the wrong way. There's a long way to go and i really don't care what level we got these players from, they're a better team than we've had for 2 seasons I just think they can do better with a tweak or two.
This time last season we'd have been on a 3 digit negative number and I honestly believe that any half decent team at any level would have beaten us. I want our management to be ambitious and demanding more and I trust them to get it.

For me personally I'd probably go more to 6.5 . In the league there has been some encouraging performances and but for a bit of a lack of concentration we could easily be 4 or 5 points better off. The cup competitions were again very disappointing, after the high of the win against Corby the performance against Newark was as bad as anything we've been served up over the last couple of seasons.

For me we're a couple of players away from challenging towards the playoffs and given my own personal pre-season prediction was 12th to 16th I'm very comfortable with that. Given the on and off field turmoil of the last couple of seasons the fact that we can see progression is a massive bonus, what we really need now is some more bodies through the gates (easier said than done)

I’ve seen a lot more of the games this season than over the last few. For me it’s been nice to see a team, that on the whole, have been competitive and not just rolling over and losing every game!
We are definately a few players light of being a stronger force. I think the weakness is defensively and I do agree regarding comments on Wilson. He’s a good player but a liability in terms of his “shitbag” qualities! He’s someone you want on your side while the referee is on our side too, but he will pick up a lot of suspensions. Dallas is a good player but has been out paced in a few of the games - pace at the back is a definate need.
We really should be around six points better off than where we are, but we have succumbed to silly late goals.
Overall - on the right tracks and just want to see our true potential unleashed! Up the diamonds!!!

On the numbers through the gate…
Not being helped by the scheduling -
Saturday poppies, diamonds, doughboys, cobblers, steelmen all at home! Not great for attracting the neutrals.
As a club can we not experiment with some Friday night games to avoid weekends like this weekend? Friday night under the lights - think it would be good for the crowds.

Just 1 Saturday 3pm game at HR saw a lower attendance than 314 last season, Spalding United - 285. Pretty sure this game was somewhere amidst our second 10+ game losing streak.

The team isn’t pulling up any trees but I’m still very disappointed to see that our attendances haven’t improved this season.
