I don't see why not - we could even combine it with the long-needed work needed to spruce up the facia of the South Stand - I guess it depends how much that would cost, but even if the cost of the physical naming is an issue, it could still be called that on tickets / ground guide etc.DiamondsFan wrote:Don't think there is much chance of getting a stand name changed. How about 'The Dale Roberts Suite' for a box name?
Renaming a stand after Dale

Re: Renaming a stand after Dale
Just seen this thread after replying to retirement of No 1 shirt...which I totally support.
Agree with all the sentiment about the very sad loss of Dale and it is at times like this that make you rethink about lots of aspects of the club. I believe it's about time we honoured Max Griggs by naming a stand after him - without Max there would be no Rushden and Diamonds to play for or support.
Retiring the shirt for Dale and having a Griggs Stand displays to the world we are a proper football club with passion and with a history (albeit short), which might start to show our detractors that we are not a plastic team with plastic supporters.
I believe that Dales tragic death can have a long lasting, and dare I say, a positive outcome for Rushden and Diamonds. This would truely give Dale a lasting legacy.

Max has said in the past that he doesn't want any tribute like that while he is still alive. Although I'm fully in support of honouring Max in this way, it would be unfair to go against his wishes.Dukes wrote:I believe it's about time we honoured Max Griggs by naming a stand after him - without Max there would be no Rushden and Diamonds to play for or support.

Re: Renaming a stand after Dale
May I suggest an idea for your consideration?
There has been much talk on here recently about a permanent memorial to Dale. Retiring the number one shirt and the fans’ banner are excellent gestures but we perhaps also need an area of the ground to dedicate to his memory.
Renaming a stand may prove impractical for several reasons – possible future sponsorship deals, altering Max’s original vision for the club, etc. Even the absence of a number one shirt may fade in time and will eventually mean little to visitors, even if we who watched and knew Dale are aware of the reasons.
Several years ago, when Dr Martens were our sponsors/benefactors, the club shop was known as ‘the Doc shop’. There was actually some talk on our messageboards of renaming it when that sponsorship finished but nothing really came of the idea. How about renaming it as THE DIAMONDS NUMBER ONE SHOP. It is after all at the De Banke end where the home fans traditionally gather and where tributes to Dale were placed This new name would mean a lot to existing fans and would perpetuate Dale’s memory. It would also be visible at the front of the complex as spectators approach the ground. Such a name would also help to explain the reasons behind the absence of a number one shirt to visitors who are unaware of the significance. Perhaps the club could even keep Dale’s number one jersey in a prominent place in there as a framed tribute.

Re: Renaming a stand after Dale
Whilst I think retiring the Number 1 shirt is an excellent idea, I do think naming a whole stand after Dale is a bit too much, but maybe instead of having "A", "B" or "C" sections maybe a Dale Roberts section? The banner can hang in it as well. Maybe then instead of having sponsorship for a whole stand we can break it up into small chunks and sell it that way?

Like the McDonalds Family Enclosure which was in the South Stand in the football league days. I agree! Two of Diamonds wrote:Whilst I think retiring the Number 1 shirt is an excellent idea, I do think naming a whole stand after Dale is a bit too much, but maybe instead of having "A", "B" or "C" sections maybe a Dale Roberts section?
