But you always hear stories from clubs at this level who claim they've been cheated out of gate money from away cup ties. I know some clubs actually try to count the attendees, so that the home club can't announce a lower crowd and keep the difference.

That won't be an issue, between us me, Jim, Bob and Chas and estimate to within a dozen.

I reckon we'll have 500 being the first game and all. It's only about an hour away, no different from some of our league games.

Hoddesdon were promoted from Step 6 last season. Dunstable finished 8th at Step 5.

I'm not sure what sort of standard that league is. 4 teams in it conceded over 100 goals last season and 5 teams scored over 100. I suppose we'll find out when we play Ampthill and Biggleswade in pre-season - two games which will probably take more importance now than they might have done.

Ssmpl is broadly the same standard as ucl in my opinion. I saw afc dunstable once last year, and they played a fairly turgid 2-2 draw on a filthy day against ampthill. I would say the tie is ver much winnable, but won't be easy by any stretch.

Slightly o/t, but ampthill did very well in the vase last year, being unlucky to go out to Hadliegh, so the preseason game will be a very interesting test

I'd agree with that, having seen a few SSMPL games too. Ampthill are a bit of a Vase specialist, as they did really well the season before too, whilst still a Step 6 team.

There is a positive consolation to having so many away games in that we can only make money, as all expenses are paid, and and we get prize money when we win, which has been increased this year.

Is that right, away teams get travelling expenses?

In the vast majority of cup competitions any surplus from the gate receipts, after deduction of pitch hire, floodlight costs, visitors travelling expenses (and accommodation if necessary), match officials' costs and policing/stewarding costs, is split evenly between the two competing clubs.

If the gate receipts are not enough to cover all of the above, then the deficit is split between the clubs.
