Thanks for your general defence on this issue, guys.
I feel I need to say a few things on this. Firstly, whoever this person is, they’ve been registered for less than a day, and have made four posts, all of which have been negative.
The second thing I noticed is that they didn’t suggest they’d listened to on any other occasions apart from the Posh game. Pre-season games are hard to commentate on. In a regular game, you know all the players, and where they’ll play. You only have to get used to the eleven to fourteen names of the opposition and their positions, and we do that pretty quickly. With pre-season, your own side has people you’ve never seen before, players are chopping and changing positions being tried out, there aren’t names on the backs of shirts to help at all, and that’s all before we even start on the opposition side! Again, new players (Posh used twenty players through the ninety minutes), only numbers on shirts to learn their names from, and again they were used in plenty of positions.
Once the proper season gets going, it becomes a hell of a lot easier.
To say the service is poor, then that’s fair comment, but poor relative to what? To Radio 5Live? To BBC Radio Northampton? If the latter, then you can’t have it both ways, because I co-commentated on the Mansfield away game last year for them (internet commentary) and I didn’t have any messages flying my way saying it was poor.
Finally, lacking the professionalism of ‘previously’? When? In the good old days when they were getting paid, or the last few seasons?
The amount of good reports that we had last season, especially during our run-in, far outweigh the bad ones. If anyone saying that the service is poor would like to record their own commentary on their phone for five minutes during tomorrow’s game, especially when tonnes of subs come on, then I’d love to hear how you do.
I’m not too bothered about the boo-boys. The majority understand what our general aim is and can see that the overall quality is pretty good (IMO) for a volunteer radio service. If anyone’s arguments are as poorly put forward as the main complaint protagonist on this thread, then in all honesty, I don’t care what you think
