All Time Diamonds XI: Centre Back
Re: All Time Diamonds XI: Centre Back
Why am I the only one to say John Flower, the man was a rock. I suppose it has before most of you lot jumped on the bandwagen.
Just noticed there must be two of us that have been around for years.

Not everyone jumped on the bandwagon, some of us were just a bit young then to remember. I went to my first game in about '95 I think it was, aged 4. I'm sure others in the late teens/early 20's will struggle to remember back then.
Those that did jump on it will be gone now we're in the BSP and not the Football League anyway.

Agreed i think one of my first games was in around 92/92 when i was four or five (against Wembley in the Trophy i think). I can vaguely remember Flower signing and maybe playing, but in truth not as well as some of the others!OsanoIsKing wrote:Behave.Mat.H wrote:Why am I the only one to say John Flower, the man was a rock. You are both spot on how can a balanced decision be hade on the listed players if the majority have never seen one the players play??jimbobjaw wrote:Agreed i think one of my first games was in around 92/92 when i was four or five (against Wembley in the Trophy i think). Re: All Time Diamonds XI: Centre Back
That's fair enough, but surely the idea of an all time XI is to pick the club's greatest servants and/or the players who have done the most for the club at the level at which they played. If it was the 'best' XI then you would pick the team that played in our Division 2 season, so Razor would probably be behind Hunter and Edwards, Darby would be behind Rodney Jack, and Butterworth and McElhatton would find themselves behind Gray and Hanlon.Superhans wrote:but the most succesful years were after 2000 so therefore we had better players you cant compare gangly john flower with his porno tash, with proffesional football league players like warburton

I never saw Jon Flower play unfortunately, but from what I've heard about him from others who watched the club back then, he was a real legend and deserves to stand alongside the likes of Razor in a vote of our all time greats. As others have already said though, you can only vote for the players you've seen play, which I think is part of the reason that Hunter as acquired so many votes.

It's the same for every club guys, I'm sure there were players in the 1920's who were better for Rochdale than those know but how many would remember?

Congrats to Barry Hunter and Ray Warburton, they now take up their places in the team.
