Roll cage on a rally car will survive much worse crashes than an F1 car, in this a piece of armco pierced the side of the car.

Renault confirm multiple fractures to right hand, wrist and leg.

Rumours abound that he may lose an arm :( I hope it doesn't come to that and I wish him a speedy recovery.

Here here.

It still amazes me that F1 drivers contracts aren't more watertight when it come to letting them compete in other competitions with risk to injury, after all you wouldn't see the likes of Rooney or Bent kicking a ball about on a Sunday helping a local pub team out.

Exactly why Bentner can't go skiing

Most cannot, they have it written into their contract to say they can't. Especially since Juan Pablo Montoya missed a load of a season due to breaking his shoulder playing tennis*. However, Kubica would never sign a contract that says he couldn't rally, and since he's one of the top three drivers he can dictate that kind of thing. Kimi was also allowed to go rallying in his last season but that was because Ferrari stopped caring about him.

*he was taking part in a motorcross race actually but the official line was tennis.

Now I knew the McLaren was a bit of a "revolutionary" design, but that new cockpit surely flouts rule 21.4.12.
