I don't think Mills got a fair crack of the whip after having recovered from that horrific injury. It always seemed strange to me that we paid his wages for a year, put him through surgery, physio, rehab, you name it, got him to a certain level of physical fitness, then almost as soon as he pulled a shirt on again he was shown the door.

When he came back the first time, he was chasing former glories and trying to regain the confidence he had had before the leg break, a confidence which (though some castigated him for arrogance) was actually one of his attributes which gave him a little bit of an edge at the level we were at at the time. He played OK, I thought, but without that sparky cockiness - nothing special, but he never let us down.

Ever since, it seems to me, he has gone from club to club, trying to make his mark as a holding midfielder in the Ginger Whinger style (that's the little Manc rat, Scholes, for those who haven't guessed). I'm not sure that a team which Justin describes as "fragile" will lose anything, and might gain much, from importing a terrier like Mills into midfield, to sit in front of the back four and form a first line of defence in front of a back four which has been sliced through too easily lately, and which might support and complement the more attacking minded and (dare I say it) lightweight midfielders we have. I think that Justin is looking to Mills to anchor Power and possibly Porter, allowing them more freedom to get forward.

Some might say that if Mills is the answer, it must be a bloody silly question, but I'm not so sure - although I haven't seen as much as the team as most on here, of course, as I am in exile presently in yr hen gwlad fy nhadau - but I think it heralds an attempt by Justin, within the limits of his budget, to stiffen up the midfield and, indirectly, the defence; and thus, one hops, build a platform from which to build attacks on the opposition goal.

He inspired me to want to be a professional footballer at this Soccer School, so I'll always have a soft spot for him. I'm personally happy he's come back.

Good luck to him - perhaps he'll herald a return to the pre-Conference good times. He always made an effort and would be here,there and everywhere as his song said. I wonder whether his mate Burge will follow him. Turley, Collins and Brady were here last night for Brackley as well - quite like the old days again.

Strangely enough I'm not disappointed that we've signed Millsy again. I think there's mileage in RD's words that we need an old head in the middle to steady the ship. For my money I'd go with Porter alongside, he's more mobile and robust than Power, but I'd seriously be tempted to bring back a 4-4-2 with him in the side because if we use him in front of the back 4 (with 4-3-3) then we're essentially a defensive team.

I saw Millsy play the last 8mins at Eastbourne last saturday. He had only been on for a minute when he made the most of a foul and got the crowd on his back straightaway. I was only a few yards away and he just laughed at them. I shouted at him "your not playing against Tomlin now Millsy" and he gave a wry smile!!! Probably puzzled.

I always liked him from the first appearance in a friendly v Birmingham and I spoke with Talbot after the game and he had high hopes for him.

People seem to be forgetting this is his third spell at the club.


I now fully expect David Town to return to the squad followed by Burge and the inimitable Leo Roget.
