Gateshead fan in peace.
I'm glad that most of your fans realise that this is the best situation available. I think our clubs were talking with each other and the FA from Monday to check whether this was logistically possible. A lot of the Gateshead fans are very pissed off that it has come to this, especially our chairman , we'll not have many at your place. Unfortuntely we share our ground with Gateshead Thunder Rugby League Club (the council own the ground so we have no choice) and after their game on sunday, the previously waterlogged pitch was destroyed. Not good for us as a passing football team. As StrayDiamond said, if the game was postponed, it would have ended up as a Tuesday night game, which is no good for either team. Some of our fans are in the same boat as yours as we had fans travelling up from Essex, etc. Not good.
If fans are travelling up looking for things to do, I'd recommend:
Beer fans drinking around the Central station. Lots of bars and pubs showing 6 hours worth of football around the train station.
Live footy, well, all I've got for you is Whitley Bay Vs Dunstable (40 miles from you?) in the FA Vase. From the Central Station, get the Metro (light rail) to Whitley Bay (20 minutes, £3.50?) and then a 5 minute walk to Hillheads Park.

I agree. An omen I reckon since Jet Harris and Tony Meehan's 60's hit "Diamonds' has just been played on Brian Matthews 'Sounds of the Sixities' so Gateshead might just be in line for another hammering today. ;)
