Senior football could return to Hinckley next season after 150 people turned up at the first meeting aimed a creating a new club. Fans of Hinckley United, who went out of business in October, have formed a working group with the aim of creating a community team.

They will now contact the Football Association in the hope of getting a team off the ground which would play at the same sort of level as Nuneaton Griff and Atherstone Town.

Group spokesman Russ Abbott said: 'We would love to play next season. We've got to get an application to the FA by the end of March I believe. I imagine we'd have to play in step five or six, possibly lower. The main thing is that we have a football club for the fans run by the fans. We've all agreed that we don't want to have anything to do with the old regime.'

'We don't know where we'll play. We'd love to play at the old ground (Leicester Road Stadium) but there are so many legal issues still there.'

Hinckley AFC has been born. Wonder if they could put in an application for the UCL for 2014/15?

Got chatting to a Hinckley supporter in the club shop at the Vase game and he said that he had been to a meeting that week with a view to forming an AFC . I said that there were rumours about them coming to the UCL but he thought I would be an Esat Mids league

Difficult to say what league they'll be in looking at the maps of league clubs on the nonleaguematters site, Hinckley is on the far eastern border of the region for the Midland Combination League, the far southern border of the East Mids League and the far western border of the United Counties Divison 1.

Whatever league they join they must start at Step 6 as per FA Ruling after Chester were allowed to join at higher level.

But would not be surprised if FA cave in!!!

I think the ruling is up to and including Step 5, with each case being assessed individually. Darlington for example are seen as a phoenix club by the FA (although this is disputed by Darlington) and were placed as Step 5.

On that basis, there was absolutely no reason why we were placed in Step 6
With our known fanbase etc we would have been certs for Step 5
