Short of the ref running over and telling him the fourth official wouldn't know how much extra time there is. In top league football the ref uses his radio to tell him. They don't have them at our level.
Maybe there's your problem. Let the fourth official do the timekeeping?

Even at the very top level of our game when additional time is announced at 90 minutes it is accepted that this is the ‘minimum’ time and therefore it is up to the referee to add any further additional time that may be necessary, in his opinion, during the previously announced additional time.
I wasn’t at Saturday’s game but judging from the video leading up to award of the of what could be deemed a soft free kick from which the Linnets equalised it is abundantly clear that Declan was in ideal position to get the ball into their half rather than turning the wrong way and subsequently losing valuable possession.
At this level it is common to see last minute goals from set piece free kicks or corners and we are particularly vulnerable in this respect and this is something our management should address as a priority.
