And that's where it's wrong, considering it was the Tories that destroyed apprenticeships and heavy industry in this country that caused us to over rely on financial services in the first place.woody wrote:MAD DOG Wrote -The point is they can hardly hold themselves up as an alternative since prior to the banks collapsing they would have done exactly the same!
Nobody ever remembers the previous Govenor of Judea..............Only Pontius Pilate
or maybe BIGGUS DICKUS
That said, the indications towards a hung parliament, show that some voters at least remember what the Tories did the last time they were in power.
Isn't it funny how prior to the previous two elections, the Tories accused Labour of stealing their ideas and that it was the result of Tory policies that Brown was implementing that caused the economic growth before the collapse of the banks.Maybe they would..................But it was Gordon & his cronies hands that did the deed.

So does yours, you're coming across as defending them given your previous responses. The last I entered one of these debates, you effectively advised me to after I said hell would freeze over before I would vote Tory, but with the Labour was, I would have to think carefully about who I would vote for(see link below). If you've changed your opinion, then fair enough, but you need to a more balanced post when heading a thread with The ELECTION - If you read nothing else - READ THIS and attacking just the Labour Party.woody wrote:Hey Mad Dog - Do you think I will vote TORY. Of course you could argue why I'm not looking at the Lib Dems in this, the truth I'm not entirely sure on their own position in the mess. Of course there are thing I'm angry with Labour about, one including the selling off of several nuclear power plants to EDF, a French state owned company.
My own stance is that I believe we will get and (I'm happy to see) a hung parliament. I'm still not sure who to vote for, although I want to see Peter Bone kicked out of Rushden & Wellingborough. Before the debates, I wondered if it would be worth seeing how the Lib Dems would do if put into power, being the unknown quantity in all this (it's been ninety years since one of their predecessors, the Liberals got in), although I do disagree with them on some issues. I don't think they will get in, but it will be interesting to see how they deal with things in a hung parliament, since I expect both the Tories and Labour to try to get them on board.

Your use of the caps lock button disappoints me Woody. Henceforth, I will vote Lib Dems.

Yes, EDF is a state owned company, and a very succesful one, with interests all over the world. If nothing else, along with GDF, Air France, and Renault ( low state holding at the moment ), it is proof that nationally owned companies do not have to be basket cases, and can be very succesful, contributing useful revenue to the treasury.Mad Dog wrote:Of course there are thing I'm angry with Labour about, one including the selling off of several nuclear power plants to EDF, a French state owned company.woody wrote:Hey Mad Dog - Do you think I will vote TORY. I agree that it is a shame to see UK companies taken over by foreign ones, but I have to say I am less concerned by EDF and nuclear power than most. EDF has a lot of expertise, and a good track record. For something as safety critical as nuclear power I'd rather see EDF in charge than most. I would have prefered that they had hired EDF expertise, and kept the industry in UK ownership, but it could be worse.
On the subject of nationalised industries, I do think that it is rather a shame that the govt will sell off Lloyds TSB and Northern Rock. They will be very profitable in future, and could contribute in the long term to govt revenue, instead of into the pockets of share holders. It would be nice to have a couple of well regulated trustworthy banks, contributing to govt funds.

Indeed. My issue is that it was privatised (I know EDF is a French state owned company, but it's not a UK state owned company, so from our perspective is a private company) in the first place, especially when at the time there was a lot of talk about the UK's energy needs. Any money they make on those plants will now leave the UK and be spent by France, when it could have been used here if we'd invested and built up.
It also makes it harder to get back should we look to go down that route, and any revenue made is taken out of the UK. I was amazed that they chose to sell something like that off.
For me, I'd like to see transport, water, gas, electric state owned, like it is in places like France so that the profits can be reinvested into the system and even into other areas if there was a possibility to do so.
Agree about the banks issue, in the long term if kept controlled this time, could prove profitable and also would mean that there would be a stable source of funding for businesses who need a loan.

Mad Dog & Matt
For once in my life, I'm in a quandry.
I voted TORY all my life up to the first NEW LABOUR win. I then supported them until now.
Their brand of 'bland conservatism' (in the early days) whooed my me to the dark side of the force.
Then we had Iraq and The Wars...........and Tony Blair leaving to turn tricks at dinners for £500K a pop.
The One Eyed Robber took over (non elected) and strengthened his Scottish Mafia cronies, and allowed his other Scottish Cronies to ruin the banks. His regime has had more taxation, stealth payments, QUANGO's and sleeze that before Maggie was kick out wailing and whinging.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
David Cameron is a 'pretty' photogenic ETON clone with a titled lady as a wife - The perfect Tory.
Do I feel comfortable with him? NO! Do I believe his newly organised party will cut the mustard? NO!
Has he sold his soul to the Devil? We would have to wait and see after he got elected.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nick Clegg and the Lib Dems - have inspired the Nation, and me included. However, is he a flash in the pan?
Does he have substance? Or is his main wish to get a hung parliament and start again from fresh? He could be a major player in a coalition, those giving him both experience and credence for subsequent elections.
Are his policies written on a fag packet, or well hidden to create the confusion we now have?
Now, you see my confusion, and the need to be persuaded where my vote will go on May 6th.
My head says, vote Tory – Get Brown Out
My heart says vote Lib Dem – and get the Old Order Out – But at what cost.
