He would have commanded a fee which we would try to agree, failing that it would go to a tribunal, which generally shafts the smaller club. This is all on the basis of the club offering him a contract of equal or better terms. The offer has to be on the table or he can go for free. This applies to any player under 24, although for some reason it goes down to 23 for Scottish clubs (hence York getting done over when Clayton Donaldson went north of the border).
