Where is our language going?

Post by woody »

As a parent of two lovely daughters, that insisted they both spoke well, and they both now have well paid and responsible jobs. People look up to them for their diction and grammar (not poncey - but correct).

I now despair that the EASTENDERS estuary speak PLUS Sweaty and Footy Speak are taking over our native language.

Examples that do my head in..................

1. FREE - Meaning the number after TWO

2. VIS - Not the magazine, but a corruption of the word THIS

3. PARKISTARN - The flattened a's now change to an 'ar' sound (BBC speak)

4. DEE MARNED - Same as the previous for the word DEMAND

5. WIV - By now you should be able to work this out

6. ARF GAR NIS STARN and - By now you should be able to work this out (BBC Speak)

Then there is football speak -
The worse example of this is Mickey Quinn on TalkSport (Great presenter but very poor English skills)

1. "I SEEN HIM" instead of "I SAW HIM"

2. "THEM PLAYERS" - should be "THOSE PLAYERS"

3. "BU...." - BUT

4. "LIVERPOOL DID GOOD"................."LIVERPOOL DID WELL"

Alan Brazil on TalkSPORT

1. FOOLEM - FULHAM

2. FOOL BACK - FULL BACK

3. JEW VENTUS - Juventus

4. WERROLD CUP - WORLD CUP

5 . MARNIN - MORNING

Add your own.............................Remember "GUD WITH FUD" from the Co op means "Good with food" and COMB IT - is Comet on TV ads.

It's called evolution. The English language will continue to evolve in terms of pronounciation and grammer as it always has done. For example, 200 years ago it was far more formal than it is now. Before that, you middle English, then Old English, etc.

To add to this thread, here's a of 'regional' (British Forces Germany) saying:

That's tight - That's unfair or greedy.

Also our neck of the woods has a mention on wiki:

I do.

If you're refering to the timing of post, you really mean mid afternoon. You were on here midday, so I should ask you the same question. ;)
