"Gary has trained hard even though he has been out of the team."
................really means:
"he's an injury nightmare and has become a liability to the club, draining us of much needed resources, we're looking for a better player and to offload him as soon as we can to some poor mug who will take him at the desperate end of the transfer window" - simples
