If HMRC wasn't incompetent, maybe. Just a few cases and examples:

And here's a good example:
HMRC has admitted that the PAYE computer system is seriously flawed. Nearly six million taxpayers have either underpaid or overpaid their tax. This is not the fault of the taxpayers but is the results of errors within HMRC. You may be affected by this problem if you are an employee and therefore taxed under the Pay As You Earn scheme (PAYE) and have also changed your employment or have income from other sources.

Thanks for that it just shows what can happen, lets hope that the club can sort the mistake out then or they could be in real trouble.

So if it's proved that we don't owe HMRC any money and we don't get points deducted can we sue the conference for falsely giving us a transfer embargo meaning we couldn't sign anyone on loan and making us play with an extremely threadbare squad? The club could easily argue that this has made the difference between making/not making the play offs??

Difficult, but not impossible. We'll still win it with 5 points to spare ;) ;)

At the fans forum, we were told it was a mistake by PAYE that caused it. That doesn't mean we've won (given the clowns on the conference board) but it means that we've able to fight our corner on this issue.

At this stage, you could argue that we should just accept the 5pts and move on, but if we don't owe the money as mentioned above, we have every right to fight this.
The mistake was made by us, during the Cousins era I believe, and we do owe money to HMRC. We acknowledged the error and made an offer to HMRC to pay the sum back in installments which they rejected, hence the delay in the transfer embargo being lifted.

We have requested a personal hearing regarding the Conference charge, and Steve Beasant is confident of putting together a case which will see it overturned. On what grounds our appeal is based, I don't know.
