I'm going to leap to the Mods defence here, they do a terrific job running this site and I know from experience how tough a job it is and how difficult it can be to keep a lid on things at times. I respect their views, they put the hours in keeping the site going, they have the final say - end of !!

If you want free speech head to Speakers Corner and shout to your hearts content - the people running the Message Board have the right to veto anything they like, they run it, they're responsible for it.

I totally agree with your point that people are leaving games because they can't express opinions on a messageboard. Why don't you post more often? Fantastic ideas there.

If people want freedom of speech to say what the hell they like then they should start up their own messageboard and see how long it lasts before their arses get sued.

Having Moderated myself in the past for a long time I can respect why certain things are deleted from time to time, having been threatened with legal action myself because of the irresponsible postings of previous users, why should Mods, who are volunteers, put themselves at risk because other people can't show some restraint?

Without decent Mods, messageboards very quickly degenerate into chaos and will close down. There is no such thing as free speech on an internet messageboard - want that, risk your own house by setting up your own.

This board is moderated really well, you're free to express views providing they're not libellous or inflammatory - thats how it should be IMO !! I'd never do it again - those that do deserve much praise and our thanks, not criticism !!

Agreed, I run a game forum with 850+ members and have to delete posts and occasionally get shit for it, some people don't understand its done for a reason. Mods are there for a reason, respect it.

While I'm not at all on the side of Wasterman (as my post history will show), technically you are more protected by libel laws if you set up a messageboard and do not moderate it at all than if you do.

Thats true up to a point, but if you are a registered owner and allow certain comments to remain in the public domain, then you MAY be held liable - would you want to take that risk as a volunteer?

An un-moderated board would soon turn into chaos with people posting anything they liked about anything or anyone, that would turn more decent posters away IMO. The people I know who have turned away from using this messageboard have done so for a variety of reasons, the moderation of it isn't one of them.

A quick Google seacrh can bring up examples, this is just one. The owner of a site, the ISP and the writer can all be sued if enough evidence is there, just read this example - times are a changing, I'm sure there has been many other cases since this one:

Update 2006: Expert warns of more chatroom libel awards
The Guardian, Wednesday March 22, 2006

A landmark legal ruling ordering a woman to pay £10,000 in damages for defamatory comments posted on an internet chatroom site could trigger a rush of similar lawsuits, a leading libel lawyer warned today....

...Although ISPs have paid out for hosting defamatory comments, this case is thought to be the first time an individual has been found to have committed libel on a internet chat site.

"The obvious and immediate potential ramification is that there will be more cases like this," said Richard Shillito, a partner at the law firm Farrer & Co. "One sees on these sites particularly unrestrained comments that people make in the heat of the moment without thinking of the legal consequences."

"A lot of people post anonymously but it is possible to find out people's identity. I think people should read this judgment as a warning to be more careful about their comments."

Ted's policy was always one of "divide & conquer" and became a monotonous drone. He did enough damage the first time he was here. Even the Knobblers fans don't like or trust him, it'd be madness to allow him back.
