I just think that AFC is clichéd, passé, and unimaginative. AFC's are ten-a-penny, let's be honest, and most people don't know what AFC actually stands for - they think they are just the obligatory initials of clubs formed by fans, and they aren't! All they mean is "Association Football Club" - like Bournemouth, or Leeds, or any other club in the north which want to make sure that everyone knows they aren't a bunch of egg-chasers!

Let's go for something which indicates BOTH the fact that we are a "phoenix", AND that we are direct successors to all that was good about R&DFC, but which is actually different - and which will make us stand out from the crowd, which we will have to do!

That's why I went for "Rushden New Diamonds"... think about it. The rhythm of the words is the same (try saying "Rushden and Diamonds" and then "Rushden New Diamonds", and you'll see what I mean), but it's sufficiently different to be noticed. On such marginal differences people get hooked.

Now imagine making phone calls to try and drum up revenue, sponsorship, local support...

Us: "Hello, it's Joe Bloggs here, I represent AFC Rushden & Diamonds..."
Them: "Rushden and Diamonds? That's Maxie's mob, ain't it?'"


Or


Us: "Hello, it's Joe Bloggs here, I represent Rushden New Diamonds..."
Them: "New Diamonds? What's new about them, then?"

And we're in!

+1 I think Rushden and Diamonds AFC is at least 100x times better than AFC Rushden and Diamonds.

The Heart ruling the head is all i can say, what a disapointment.

Its just one letter added and moved to the front of the name, is that all we can do. its supposed to be a new beginning, a change for the better, a new dawn.

I hear what your saying but aint sure adding new into the name will make that much difference. If you say Rushden New Diamonds to sponsors etc, then as soon as they hear Rushden and the Diamonds part they will automatically think Maxie's mob anyways.

The way in which i see it is the fans will probably follow the team regardless of what their called, so whichever round afc goes, or whether new is in the name, when the team gets going it will just roll off the tongue.

For me personally keeping the name as close as possible is the best thing that can happen... teams have all done it and succeeded, chester fc, afc telford, fc halifax...
It's all about keeping the spirit of the club, and the club joined as one...

Although i quite like Rushden New Diamonds actually!! ;)

I'll happily go long with the majority, I think that the name is kind of a moot point anyway, what the club is called is not nearly as important as what the club represents.

I voted for New Diamonds because I think it represents a new beginning, which is what this is supposed to be. As well as this it also sounds quite cool and is unique. Plus I'd agree with RD that AFC is very boring now. Oh well.

Wouldn't have to change any chants (exc. Take me home) for AFC R&D though really. The majority of outsiders will still call us just Rushden & Diamonds anyway.

To be honest I think Rushden New Diamonds is a tad tacky and cheesy, and the fundraising benefits of it are slightly exaggerated. Anyone who has a bit of football knowledge (or just an interest in the local area) will surely know that we've long since not been "Maxie's lot" - this will have become even clearer recently.

I voted AFC Rushden and Diamonds. Yes, it's just adding an 'A' and re-arranging the 'FC', but to me it's important that we remain as close to the original Diamonds as possible.
