I'm not sure I even agree with that statement to be honest. I think R&D might be unique in that in the entire history of the club we never once sought applications for the job of Manager and never conducted interviews. Whichever regime was running the club the Managers were appointed via previous acquantence or some pre-knowledge or link to the individual. We missed a trick.
From what i was aware of the situation Barry was still under contract as a player but called a manager and still paid as a player therefore to bring in anyone new as manager wouldve meant an extra outlay that the club were in no position to spendm and if these magical funds were available then we would have used them to remain the services of Paul Hall Onandi Lowe and Paul Underwood instead of having to let them go at Easter! that was our real problem.

Mike, I think Chorlton is referring to Hunter's second spell in charge after Tippett left, not his short period in the hot seat immediately after the fire sale. ;)

He was appointed, which is not his fault, and the spirit he put in that team that stayed up was outstanding. Never mind Sharpy, the games before that, and yes, I will bring up Orient again.

Even in his second season, when he brought Turner and Jacko through I was sure he'd keep us up, but wasn't to be.

But what else had he to work with?

Only JE has ever poured so much of himself into the job of managing us since I've been watching. On the touchline every kick meant something to Barry. The ovation he got when he brought himself on against Cambridge when we stayed up was well deserved. We were f*cked under Tippet.

You could have 140 years of no achievement, or twenty years of glorious victories, you decide.
