We have had our belly full of the rain but we still have the snow to come

I can't remember the last season that a game wasn't lost due to either a frozen pitch or snow lying on it

I'm sure someone will help me out though!

At least we don't have the long away trips we used to have with R&DFC and the prospect of a long journey without any football at the end of it. Who can forget the trips north to Macclesfield or Bury , or the two abortive trips south in the same season to Salisbury - or indeed the Grays fog or the Leatherhead flood. Oddly the most frustrating one was one of the nearer ones, when we failed to play at Oxford Utd on a balmy Boxing Day because they hadn't covered their pitch properly.

I think it was Leek when the game was abandoned because of problems at a chemical plant or similar nearby.

For those of us of a certain age we can remember the winter of 62/63 when we had no games anywhere for 3 months from New Years Day.

At the moment it still does not sound too hopeful for next week.
I am feeling sorry for Welly, I don't think they have had home match since Boxing Day.

At least Long Buckby wont have a fixture backlog they only have 7 more games to play! Maybe Nat Liburd will want to come back when they have no more games to play!

The Oxford one really pissed me off, it was going to be a 5 figure crowd as well I seem to remember, in the end I ended up Corby and a few 100 :roll:

And talking of Bury, they had their game called off at Torquay around 12.30 on yesterday. With the weather down there, surely any Bury fans going down there would have known it was a risk, but there's always a few that go to these away games no matter what and I assume they could have been at least 2-3 hours into their journey by then and not to mention the wasted journey of the Bury team, who may have been there already.

And talking of Bury, they had their game called off at Torquay around 12.30 on yesterday. With the weather down there, surely any Bury fans going down there would have known it was a risk, but there's always a few that go to these away games no matter what and I assume they could have been at least 2-3 hours into their journey by then and not to mention the wasted journey of the Bury team, who may have been there already.

It was always going to be off, but unfortunately the club had to wait for the extra deluge of rain before they were allowed to officially call it off as pitch was just playable until that extra downpour. Given football league rules and insistence that a game be given "every possible chance" nothing more could be done. However, most Bury fans must surely have been aware of this and either not traveled or made plans for another game en route (Exeter v Portsmouth went ahead for any who got that far!).

Amusingly, I got some retweets from Bury fans after posting this tweet:

"Would feel sorry for @buryfcofficial fans making long trip to Devon tomorrow if there is expected postponement, such a cost in time + cash"

They must not have bothered to read the next tweet...

"But having traveled to watch Diamonds play at Gigg Lane, only for club to willingly do nothing to get game on, I say sod them!"




PS: A trip from Bury to South Devon is NEVER, EVER a wasted trip

I seem to remember that the game at Gigg Lane was the only game in the Football League that was postponed that day. I remember I went to see Man City v Blackburn, compounding the money I'd wasted that day by paying £30 to watch a boring goalless draw.

I seem to remember that it was eventually played on a horrible Tuesday evening and the pitch was waterlogged and to all intents and purposes unplayable. However we were cheered up by the tremendous 30 yard free kick from Wayne Hatswell.

Formic is also correct, in that not only were all other league games on, no non-league games of note in the area were postponed. I am sure the injuries at Bury were a pure coincidence to their being unable to deal with 'frost under the main stand' problem.
