We could....

Post by Pigman »

......potentially go 7th tonight if we beat Bath, Cambridge beat Newport and Gateshead beat York - 7th with 3 games in hand but a gap of 8 points between us and Kiddy who sit in 5th place. I'm clinging on to the hope of a play-off spot, but its looking tough when you look at the run of games coming up. I reckon its so tight now that a defeat or draw tonight would almost kill those hopes dead, unless other team's results go our way over the coming games.

As i said in another thread, Kidderminster's run-in is vile, but ours isn't much better. We have games in hand whereas they have points in the bag.

Kiddy's run in may be poor, but they're far more likely to beat those kind of teams than we are. I'm trying to visualise this current diamonds team in the play-offs.......no.....sorry ;)

I'd have to agree with Barton Raz's approach - I can't see us making the play-offs in a million years.

HOWEVER - I think it is an incredible achievement by Justin and this set of players that we have even got into a position where playoffs are a possibility. Just a couple of months ago we looked down and out and there was a possibility of being dragged into a relegation battle, so to have pulled ourselves back up like this is great to see. Ultimately though we do not have the quality needed to compete at the top. This is not anything to be ashamed of - look at the size of Luton and Wimbledon, and the amount of money being pumped into Crawley.

In summary - I expect us to tail off and finish around 10th, but won't be at all disappointed with that effort.

I'm pretty sure most of us said before the season that we would be happy with a top-half/top-10 finish, which would be a great achievement for a team with as small a budget as ours, and one that lost it's 3 best players over the summer.

I think the fact that we are even considering a play-off run shows how well we have done. I don't think we'll make it, but for me I'd still be happy with our pre-season aims and would count it as an achievement, and something to build on over the next couple of seasons.

Assuming the match v Histon is now in April we have a last 12 fixtures that includes 8 away matches.
Our immediate goal is to get up there with Kiddy but we can only afford to drop one point( er..which actually is not possible) or hope that Kiddy drop some points over the next couple of weeks when they have some really tough games. There is really only one place available so it is asking a lot.

I think with this squad we will struggle to do that, but if PCH strikes a rich seam of form who knows what may happen.

Keep the diary free for the play off dates...whenever they are.Two matches against Luton could be fun!!!
