I had a Bacon and Sausage Bap, and it was marvellous.
Enjoyed my pint of Harts No1 . A 4.1% with a bitter finish, and rich and full in flavour more commonly found in a 4.5 or 4.6%. (There`s my entry for Pseud`s Corner)
This could easily turn into a Saturday afternoon ritual. :D

Will the recent introduction of Osborne's 'Pasty Tax' mean that we'll see a 20 % rise in the price of cooked goods?

Basically VAT @20% is already liable on Takeaway food, but not on pasties which are cooked and left to cool. However if they are cooked warm to order, or kept warm they will be subject to VAT.

Does that clear things up?

(can you guess which sector I work in?) ;)

I thought that was the case, Phil. Thanks for clearing that up. So if the chips are left to cool to the 'ambient temperature' they will be zero rated for VAT purposes and approximately 20% cheaper?
Anybody fancy cold chips? :o

There are actually five "tests" but I wouldn't want to bore you to death. But basically yes you're right, cold chips would be VAT free (like frozen oven chips, microchips that you buy at the supermarket etc), but who wants cold chips? :?

VAT is basically a service charge. You pay VAT on any service, in this case chips being cooked and served to order.

It's so complicated, but what else would you expect from HMRC!
